What COVID-19 Means For Downtown and Main Street Retail (Part II) – Starting The Climb: A Retail New Deal

I know I was a bit of a downer in my last article. This time I’ll try to be a little more upbeat, or at least, more practical, offering some initial guidance on the following question: how do Downtown and Main Street district managers and stakeholders start on what will undoubtedly be a steep uphill climb? What are the first steps?

Once again, for the purposes of this article, “BCV” should be used to refer to “Before Coronavirus”, and ACV, to “After Coronavirus”, while “Downtown and Main Street districts” has been shortened to “DMSD’s”.

The public and non-profit sectors have understandably focused much of their energies in recent weeks on triage, working tirelessly and resourcefully to help small businesses stay afloat. At some point very soon, however, they will also need to start looking beyond the initial survival phase, setting the stage for recovery. In other words, they will have to walk and chew gum at the same time.
