Slide Deck for “Beyond The Pop-Up – Addressing Large-Scale Retail Vacancies” Presentation

Upon request, I have attached the SLIDE DECK for the panel discussion in which I participated, “BEYOND THE POP-UP – ADDRESSING LARGE-SCALE RETAIL VACANCIES”, at the International Downtown Association’s (IDA) annual conference in Seattle a couple of weeks ago. (Apologies to those who were turned away at the door for lack of room). My bit – slides #5 through #14 – offers some prospects and solutions for the growing number of larger (5K sq ft and up) vacancies in our Downtowns, starting with the still-existing tenant interest (e.g. major retail brands, experiential and “eater-tainment” concepts), proceeding to other kinds of uses (e.g. “meds-and-eds”, arts and culture) and finishing with the role that BID’s and similar entities could play in promoting, sponsoring and managing “entrepreneurial platforms” in such spaces, with a deeper discussion of the analytical and organizational considerations that they need to sort through in deciding whether or not to do so. The remainder of the deck features the presentations of my three fellow panelists: Cassie Hoeprich, Sean Webster and Dillon Goodson. Keep in mind, of course, that slides are meant to be spoken to, and can easily be misinterpreted without the speaker in your ear – so feel free to reach out for clarification.
