Pedestrian Malls: The Newest Fad?
So we’re suddenly reconsidering the pedestrian mall, huh? Seems like just yesterday that even introducing the idea risked professional ostracization. On the one hand, this rather abrupt shift frustrates me, as it underscores the faddishness, dogmatism and group-think that pervades our planning, urban design and revitalization communities. On the other, I am exhilarated by some of the opportunities that it presents, for I had never quite agreed with the received wisdom on the subject to begin with.
